I started my career with a bachelor’s degree in comparative religion, then worked for ten years as a reporter and editor for a weekly newspaper. This experience refined my listening skills and the ability to craft a story quickly. Then the long hours spent trying to meet deadlines began to take its toll.
With burnout on the horizon, I visited a career counselor. I knew I wanted to talk with people. I just didn’t want to write about it anymore. “That’s counseling!” my counselor said. I made a project of finding out if this was a good fit for me. Everyone I talked to in this field loved their job 20 or 30 years down the road.
That convinced me! I signed up for a master’s degree in counseling and worked as a counselor. This experience honed my ability to build rapport, ask pertinent questions, and interpret information
Eventually I found my niche in career counseling. I founded MLT Careers in 2010. Today I provide resume writing, upgraded LinkedIn profiles, and coaching for job seekers. While I may not be a licensed counselor, my clients appreciate my services as a job-search coach.
I grew up with parents who worked in one job their entire careers. I’m also the first to start my own business. After hours, I enjoy reading, knitting, and playing video games. I also enjoy kayaking, hiking, and just being outdoors with my family.
